Introducing the new drift missile. You read that right. My dad and I paid $800 for this 633 with the express purpose of drifting the shit out of it.
So about the car. Despite the badging its a 633, not an M6. 5 speed, <90k miles shown, and doesn’t currently run. Don’t know what it’s going to need and we haven’t even seen it in person yet. Dan of NEFR pizza delivery fame picked it up for us and it is now in New Hampshire awaiting inspection.
This is probably peak pissing off the purists and I am 100% behind that.

I've always had a soft spot for the (old) 6 series, and that color is glorious. Why one of those as a starting point for a drift car?

Because my dad and I were looking for something to drift and this was $800. It’s not the most thought out idea.

No idea. I don’t know BMWs at all and haven’t even seen the car in the metal.

Not even close to being a purist, but there has to be an E36 beat to hell close by that would be more suitable than an E24.
Unless the E24 is a stiff breeze away from being unsalvageable.

I am so jealous. This looks like such a fun project. Are you gonna swap the motor? If you do, I vote overboosted B58 swap.

… it’ll be scrap sooner.
I can respect the aspects of car control that drifting can be... but for the great demonstrations, there has to be many, many, many more wadded up pieces of scrap as wasted cars... and a classic BMW from a period where BMWs were among the best cars built ... is truly a waste of a great, classic road car.
An 800$ 6-series BMW, unless it is irrecoverably rusty, is all the more feasible to restore or resto-mod the car into a great road car that won’t get wadded up.

No plans to swap it unless the original engine is unsalvageable or we blow it.

We aren’t going to be running tandems with it and everyone who is going to be driving it knows how to drift and are driving instructors. The shell is going to be fine. The original engine that hasn’t run in who knows how long probably isn’t.

There probably are crusty E36s around. My dad and I both wanted to find something unique to drift and there are plenty of E36s at any drift event.
We aren’t going to be caging it to run tandems so the shell is going to remain undamaged. If we do anything substantial to it it would likely be a restomod with something like an E46 M3 drivetrain.

The owner was basically the dictionary definition of more money than brains and just wanted it gone and didn’t care about getting any money for it after it had been sitting for a while. Right place at the right time.

In reality it is probably going to end up being plated as a street car with a drift suspension setup underneath . We have access to caged cars if we want to run tandems so it will be a fun toy to make solo runs with rather than a full on missile.

I’m really looking forward to getting it running and sideways. If I had my way it would end up with an E46 M3 drivetrain at some point down the line but we will see how the original engine does.

It is your car. you don’t have to justify it to me or anyone else here.
I hope it serves your purpose well, I do.
The point of view that I see, is that I look at an E24 BMW and see a classic car, and one of the great Grand Tourers of the 70's and 80's, with iconic style... and when I see that in my mind’s eye, I see one in original condition, or a classy resto-mod update.
I just don’t see a drift car with wild graphics, sponsorship logos, zip-tie stitched on panels, a stripped out interior with a giant handbrake lever, or 80-degree steering lock on the front suspension, and a transplanted engine banging off the rev limiter inside a cloud of tire-smoke. For what it is worth, I don’t see a drag strip demon, either...
When I see a 6-series BMW, I see something like an Alpina tribute, especially in that fantastic green paint.
I don’t see a Nissan S-chassis or modded 350Z, or an engine-swapped wide-body FT86.
That’s just me, and what I see in my mind’s eye, and what I would try to do if I had an opportunity at an E24 project car.
As I said, it is your car, not mine... and I may well be proven wrong by a killer E24 drift machine.

I don’t know if there’s a whole lot of difference, I’ve never worked on an l jet system.

I will have to keep those in mind. I imagine after sitting like it has there are going to be a lot of rubber bits that are going to need replacement.

If it gets any kind of swap it will be with a newer BMW M drivetrain.

They eat through the rubber bushings anyways. What’s the plan for suspension? Ground control or just some bilsteins/konis with h&r springs?

Decent set of shocks and some lowering springs. Then a bunch of experimenting to figure out how to get the appropriate steering angle and camber out of it to make it drift. I need to to a bunch of research to find out if maybe I can make an E30 angle kit work on it. I know literally nothing about these so I have no idea what parts bins I may or may not have access to.

unfortunately I doubt it will work, totally different front supsension setup. the e24/e28 uses a recirculating steering box, and a front control arm and rear thrust arm for locating the steering knuckle. I believe that the m5/m6 have a faster ratio box if you can find one. They do respond pretty well to some toe out though, at the cost of straight line stability obviously . As far as diffs go you have access to any e24/e28/e30/e36 medium case diffs, just have to swap diff flanges if it’s from an e30/e36. e34 540i/m5 brakes are a direct fit upgrade to the original brakes, you can swap in e31 brembos as well but thats pricier. There’s a guy on mye28 that’s been trying out adapting various porsche calipers with e46 m3/e60 550i rotors, which is something I’ve been seriously pondering. http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=146616
